Borno State to defy Boko Haram and open all public schools in early November.

PUBLIC schools across Borno State are to re-open in early November after seven months of being shut as part of the state government's attempts to bring back some form of normality to the region.

Across Borno State, public schools were closed on March 14, after deadly attacks by Boko Haram insurgents in schools in neighbouring Yobe State.

However, with pupils looking set to lose almost a whole academic year, Governor Kashim Shettima inaugurated a 19-man committee on the resuscitation of primary school education in the state last week.

Committee chairman, Dr Mohammed Dongel, said that the schools would reopen in the first or the second week of the month. He added that the committee would pay periodic visits to schools to ensure implementation of government plans on increased school enrolment.

Dr Dongel said:

“We hope to reopen all public schools by the first or second week of November God willing. By then we hope to have put in place all necessary infrastructure and instruction materials for conducive teaching and learning.”

“We plan to introduce various measures to encourage parents to send their children and wards to school.

These measures will also help entice pupils who are enrolled in school to remain.” No details have yet been released about increased security at schools as Boko Haram is still very much operation across the state.

Schools have been one of the terrorist sect's main targets as it sees Western education as a sin
